The April 21 special election will ask Virginia voters whether they support allowing the state legislator to redistrict the state's congressional map for 2026-2030. This would be an amendment to the state constitution, which currently requires congressional redistricting every ten years. This amendment will be proposed as a "yes" or "no" question on the ballot.
The proposed constitutional amendment would allow the Virginia General Assembly to follow in the footsteps of many other states, including Texas, Missouri, and California, in conducting mid-decade congressional redistricting to give a single political party maximum advantage within the state ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. If approved by voters in April, Virginia will likely draw a new congressional map ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
